Utah State Parks camping
Utah's state parks sit in the gap between the national parks and the backcountry: reservoirs on the Wasatch Front, red rock at Snow Canyon and Kodachrome Basin, dunes at Coral Pink, and canyon rim sites at Dead Horse Point. They are usually cheaper than a national park campground, easier to book, and open far later into the shoulder seasons.

Scofield State Park

Scofield State Park is situated 7,600 feet above sea level in the Manti-LaSal Mountains of the Wasatch Plateau. The 2,800-acre lake offers excellent boating and year-round fishing. During winter months, the area serves as a base for snowmobile and cross-country skiing in the spectacular mountains surrounding the park.

Yuba State Park got its name from the individuals who built the dam. Local farmers and ranchers had to build the dam themselves or risk losing their water rights. The men working on the structure called it the U.B.

Hyrum State Park

Years before the Mormon settlers arrived in the valley, General William H. Ashley stopped near what is now the edge of Hyrum Reservoir and cached $150,000 worth of furs, mostly beaver, in the winter of 1825-26.
Jordanelle State Park

The Hailstone Recreation Area is the premier development of Jordanelle State Park, and is designed to accommodate active recreational pursuits. Hailstone is a large developed campground and day-use area on the west side of the reservoir, and is a favorite location of boaters and RV campers.

Willard Bay State Park

Willard Bay is a freshwater reservoir located 12 miles northwest of Ogden on the flood plains of the Great Salt Lake. An earthfilled dike and natural shoreline make up the 20-mile enclosures. The dike is officially named the Arthur V.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, cattlemen and homesteaders tried to make a go of it along the banks of the Strawberry River in the area now occupied by the reservoir and dam. Their story is one of hardship, perseverance and facing near starvation in a very hostile and harsh environment.

The name of both the town and reservoir honors the three Huntington brothers, Oliver, William, and Dimick, who first explored this area in 1855. Dimick was an interpreter for the local Indians; William was famed as a scout and explorer; and Oliver was an official recorder for the unsuccessful Elk Mountain Mission to Moab.

Camp Floyd Stagecoach Inn Group

Established in 1858, Camp Floyd housed the largest concentration of U.S. troops then in the United State. The troops were sent to Utah to suppress a rumored Mormon rebellion which never took place. The army was recalled back east in 1861 for the Civil War emergency.

Utah Lake is unique in that it is one of the largest freshwater lakes in the West and yet it lies in an arid area that receives only about 15 inches of rainfall a year. The mouth of the Provo River, where it empties into Utah Lake, was undoubtedly a very popular camping place for the early inhabitants of Utah Valley.
Booking a Utah state park campsite
Most Utah state park campgrounds are reservable up to four months ahead, and popular reservoir parks such as Sand Hollow, Jordanelle and Bear Lake fill for summer weekends the day the window opens. Midweek nights and late September through October are the easiest times to find an open site.
